What is WebRTC? How WHOBEE Uses It for Private Video Chat

What is WebRTC?

WebRTC (Web Real-Time Communication) is an open-source technology that enables real-time audio, video, and data communication directly between web browsers — without needing any installed plugins or software.

Developed by Google and standardized by the W3C and IETF, WebRTC is now built into every major browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and Opera.

How Traditional Video Calls Work (And Their Problem)

In traditional video calling systems (like older Skype, Zoom, or Google Meet):

1. Your video is captured by your camera

2. It's sent to a company's server

3. The server relays it to the other person

This means the company has full access to your video stream. They can, in theory, record it, analyze it, or share it. Your privacy is entirely dependent on trusting that company.

How WebRTC Changes Everything

WebRTC enables peer-to-peer (P2P) connections:

1. Your video is captured by your camera

2. A brief handshake happens through a signaling server (to find each other on the internet)

3. Your video travels directly to the other person's device

The company's servers are never in the video path. WHOBEE literally cannot see or record your video streams — it's technically impossible with our architecture.

The ICE/STUN/TURN Stack

Behind the scenes, WebRTC uses:

  • STUN servers — Help each browser discover its public IP address to initiate the P2P handshake
  • TURN servers — A fallback relay used only when a direct P2P connection isn't possible (e.g., behind strict corporate firewalls). WHOBEE uses these minimally and only when necessary.
  • ICE — The framework that tries all possible connection paths and picks the best one

End-to-End Encryption in Text Chat

WHOBEE's text chat uses an additional layer of security beyond WebRTC:

  • ECDH key exchange — Each session generates a unique encryption key pair
  • AES-GCM encryption — Messages are encrypted before they leave your browser
  • No key storage — Keys exist only in your browser's memory for the duration of the session

This means even if someone intercepted the encrypted messages traveling through our signaling server, they would be unreadable gibberish.
